WURD To Host FOUNDER’S DAY As Live Broadcast/Virtual Event
Black Talk Radio Outlet Will Host Major Annual Commemoration Amid Pandemic
a WURD feature
(PHILADELPHIA, PA) – WURD Radio (96.1FM / 900AM / WURDRadio.com / WURDApp), the only African American owned and operated talk radio station in Pennsylvania, and one of a few in the country, will host its annual Founder’s Day Community Celebration on Thursday, August 20th as a LIVE broadcast and multimedia convening on both its LIVE radio and digital properties. This important event, held annually, honors the life and work of Walter P. Lomax Jr. M.D., physician, entrepreneur, philanthropist and legendary founder of WURD radio.
Founder’s Day programming will also be an opportunity to discuss wealth creation and economic self determination in the Black community -- key issues important to Dr. Lomax throughout his lifetime. These topics will be framed as part of WURD’s new Lively-HOOD initiative focused on jobs, entrepreneurship, small business development and financial literacy.
All Founder’s Day discussions will start LIVE at 6am with the daily broadcast of Day Break, hosted by Helanah, who will lead a discussion on “Celebrations as An Act of Wellness.” WURD’s morning show Wake Up With WURD at 7am ET with Solomon Jones will feature a “Becoming Your Legacy” discussion with members of ManUp PHL, Jones’ initiative to address gun violence. This will be followed by a series of interviews on the memory of Dr. Lomax with luminaries such as Sonia Sanchez, Cody Anderson, Haki Madhubuti, Joan Myers Brown and others. Special guests Beverly Lomax, wife of Dr. Lomax, and the Lomax family will talk about the impact of their husband and father and what that means for Philadelphia and the Black community as WURD’s national profile continues to expand.
Later in the morning at 10am will be an exclusive “Green is the New Black” discussion exploring environmental justice and economic development led by Reality Check host and ecoWURD Managing Editor Charles Ellison. That discussion will be followed at 10:30am with The Source host Andrea Lawful Sanders leading a panel of Black women political leaders, including city and state elected officials, on the “Black Women, Black Power: Exploring The 100th Anniversary of the Women's Right to Vote.” “Lomax Legacy Panels” will highlight key arenas Dr. Lomax made contributions to: Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Health and Wellness, and Medicine and Social Justice. The latter will be moderated by WURD President & CEO Sara Lomax-Reese (daughter of Dr. Lomax). Happy Hour host Syreeta Martin, as well as WURD host Envy McKee will moderate discussions. Throughout the day, WURD will also broadcast community stories that reflect on Dr. Lomax’s impact.
This series of community conversations about the importance of independent Black media, health and wellness, environmental justice and economic empowerment were all topics embodied in Dr. Lomax’s life and legacy.
“The Pandemic, of course, forced us to think creatively about an alternative format and medium for Founder’s Day,” said Lomax-Reese. “But, instead of deterring us, it actually emboldened us to construct an opportunity that makes WURD and Dr. Lomax’s legacy much more accessible. Our reach is expanding daily to audiences not just in Philadelphia, but also to Black communities throughout the nation and the world who view us as an authentic, progressive and desperately needed source of empowerment during urgent times like these.”
“We will continue to encourage listeners - old and new - to take a pledge towards constructive activities that will enhance the agency of their personal lives, their families and their total community. That is the WURD Way. That was my father’s way.”
