WURD Radio (96.1FM / 900AM / WURDRadio.com / WURDApp), the only African American-owned talk radio station in Pennsylvania, and one of only a few in the country, proudly announced that it is hosting its first ever ecoWURD Environmental Justice Summit on Sunday, October 20, 2019 at Bartram’s Garden on 5400 Lindbergh Boulevard in Philadelphia. The event will take place 2-5pm ET, with presentations broadcast LIVE on WURD Radio.

ecoWURD is WURD’s multimedia environmental justice journalism initiative examining Philadelphia communities and beyond at the intersection of race, income and the environment. Now one full year in operation, ecoWURD presents its first ever summit to further explore these issues in partnership with Bartram’s Garden in Southwest Philadelphia.
WURD personalities and staff will facilitate timely community conversations on a number of major environmental issues relevant to Black people locally, regionally and nationally. Experts will include: John Francis, Author, PlanetWalker and The Ragged Edge of Silence; Jeannine Kayembe, Designer, Wholistic.art, Founder- Life Do Grow Farm; Zulene Mayfield, Environmental Activist; Joanne Douglas, Watershed Interpretation + Youth River Program Manager, Bartram's Garden; and a musical performance by environmental justice band, Ill Fated Natives. Topics will range from environmental racism to the disproportionate impact of climate change on vulnerable populations, and how those populations adapt. Experts will examine challenges such as pollution and the linkages to public health while engaging dialogue on strategies that can make places greener, more sustainable and much more reliant on clean energy..
Among the many highlights at the ecoWURD Summit will be the debut of “WASTED,” an ecoWURD commissioned photo exhibit by noted photographer Zamani Feelings which spotlights the problem of trash in Philadelphia. Attendees will also benefit from a number of vendors, institutions and green-based companies participating in ecoWURD’s “Lively-HOOD” Green Sector Job Resources section. A healing drum circle music will be performed by Music Over Matter.
“We’re excited to work with various community stakeholders to examine the issue of environmental justice and its unique impact on the Black community,” said Sara Lomax-Reese, President and CEO of WURD radio. “When you look at the conditions in our neighborhoods, the quality of our health from challenges with air and water, and the global climate crisis, we know that the Black community must be at the center of the environmental justice fight.”
