(Philadelphia, PA) — WURD Radio (96.1FM / 900AM / WURDRadio.com / WURD App / WURD TV), the only Black owned and operated talk radio station in Pennsylvania and one of a few in the nation, announced that it is hosting its first major Philly Farm Social in partnership with Bartram’s Garden. The event features live cooking demonstrations, food tasting, wine pairings, and conversations emphasizing the benefits of Black Diaspora food, culinary arts, healthy community eating and dietary lifestyle habits.
The WURD Philly Farm Social takes place at the Sankofa Community Farm at Bartram’s Garden on 5400 Lindbergh Boulevard in Philadelphia on Friday, May 31st, 2019 from 5pm - 7pm. This is a continuation of WURD’s ongoing ecoWURD environmental justice journalism initiative exploring the intersection of race, income and the environment.
Special guests and experts will include: Christopher Bolden Newsome, Founding Co-Director of the Sankofa Community Farm; Food and Drink Historian Tonya Hopkins (@theFoodGriot); and Chef Laquanda Dobson, Member of the Black Dirt Farm Collective and Assistant Farmer at Sankofa Community Farm.
“So much of what Philadelphia has always had to offer is in its food and its culture,” said Sara Lomax-Reese, President and CEO of WURD radio. “Indeed, Philly is one of the great ‘food’ capitals. So, we are always looking for an opportunity where we can help raise awareness around that legacy, and show how that’s been inspired by a rich Black cultural tradition. More importantly, we view this as a key moment to encourage healthy food routines that improve community diet at a time when African Americans are faced with high chronic disease rates precipitated by lack of access to nutritious options. And with the rise of urban farming, we can educate residents on the importance of creating, controlling and growing from their own organic food supply chains. This is the Sankofa way: to ‘go back’ and recapture our roots for a better, healthier future.”
The WURD Philly Farm Social is open to the public at a cost of $15 for ForWURD Members and $25 for non-Members. Tickets can be purchased via EventBrite here or by calling 215.425.7875. More information and digital conversation will happen at #PhillyFarmSocial.
