Decision Makers: Rev. Dr. Jon Robinson On "Ecological Apartheid"
How do we define ecological apartheid? And how do we reverse the generations of impact from ecological apartheid? Climate impacts have been worsening in Black communities, Brown communities for a long time. How do we engage communities in a way that gets them alarmed and motivated about climate as a central issue? What exactly are "smart surfaces" and how could they play a central role in reducing climate impacts?
We think of excessive, record-breaking heat this summer. We think of schools opening up for the fall season in major cities like Philadelphia being shut down early due to excessive heat. We think of record-breaking deaths from heat stroke. And we also think about the unprecedented flooding destruction from historic hurricanes and we wonder: could smart surface projects have significantly reduced those dangers? Decision Makers talks with Rev. Dr. Jon Robinson, Vice Chair of the Board of the Oikos Institute for Social Impact and Senior Program Director in Smart Surfaces at Metropolitan A.M.E. Church.
