Decision Makers: CA Assemblymember Mike Gipson's Take Into How A State Prepares For A New Administration
Back in December, the Governor of California convened an emergency legislative session in response to an incoming Trump administration. What does that look like? How does that work? How do constituents in the nation’s largest state process all of this? Still, what are issues top of mind for residents and how do policymakers address those? How do Black lawmakers navigate through all of this, and how are they evaluating relationships and conversations with other groups in a legislature? Looking forward, a state like California will also be forced to address major environmental issues, from destructive climate change impacts to air pollution to water scarcity and wildfires. These are important since they disproportionately impact underserved and frontline Black and Brown populations while intersecting with and aggravating other top issues. What's the plan for that?
Decision Makers had a conversation with California state Assemblymember Mike Gipson, who represents the Golden state's 65th legislative District. He joins us as part of our continuing Decision Makers: State Legislator Communities of Color series, done in partnership with the Council of State Governments East. Assemblyman Gipson is also National Vice Chair for the Council of State Governments.
